Step 1

First of all you need your image. I found my image on sxc.hu. I found this image perfect for what I want to do here. ;) .

image

Step 2

What you need to do now is to make the image black and white. For those who use Adobe Photoshop CS3 you must go to Image – Adjustments – Black & White. Also you can play a little with the settings till you get the result you want.

image

Step 3

Now you need to add some lights. Select the Gradient Tool and select this color: #05edfc. Also from the Gradint settings make sure you select the Radial Gradient and for the color effect to be Foreground to Transparent.

Create a new blank layer over the image. Click and drag.

image

Step 4

Next name the light Blue and set the blending option to Screen. You can move it wherever you want. I allready have an idea where to put my lights.

image

Step 5

Do this again but this time use this color: #fc05dc. Name it pink.

image

Step 6

And finnaly the same effect but this time use #fcf905 and set the Blending Options to Color Burn and name it yellow.

image

Step 7

Now I want to make something that will give this image some extra applause.

Create a new layer and fill it with Black. Make sute this layer is lower than the lights and over the actual image.

image

Step 8

As you can see I have applied some effects to this black layer. Use my Blenting Options.

image

Step 9

Now set the Fill to 0%. You should have something like this:

image

Step 10

Add a vector mask to this layer and mask away some parts of this patern. Here are my results:

image

Step 11

Now we will make the same thing but but this time make a different pattern. Make a new layer, fill it with black and use these settings. Also set the Fill to 0%.

image

Step 12

Now as we did with the first pattern, make add a vector mask and mask away some parts you don’t want. Here is my result:

image

Step 13

Ok. We have the basic of this image. Now we need to set the brush tool to match our needs because we want to make some sparcles. Go to Window – Brushes. This will bring out the brushes settings. Use my settings or experiment with your own.

image

Step 14

Make a new layer and make a few sparkles. Also make different layers and make sparkles with different size. Here is somethins I have done. Also there is how I organised my layers pallete.

image

Step 15

We will ad some more sparkles later. Now I want to make something new here. Make a new folder, name it Big Cirles and in this folder we will create a new layers. Make a selection like mine using the Eliiptical Marquee Tool.

image

Step 16

Now using the Gradient with a white color selected and Linear Gradient click and drag like me. After you make it you can set the Ocapity lower.

image

Step 17

Now we need to duplicate these circles and try to make a small mozaic with them.

image

Step 18

Next do the same thing but this time smaller circles. Also put them into a separate folder.

image

Step 19

It is time to ad more sparkles to the image. First make a new folder and name it around light. Here make a new layer and draw with the brush around the boy. After that mask away some parts and leave this light only exactly at the edges of this boy.

image

Step 20

Set it to Screen and also duplicate it. Make the duplicate Opacity lower.

image

Step 21

As I instructed you before make some sparcles in a new layer. We want to make these sparkles look like they come from that light around the boy so mask away some of them.

image

Conclusion

You are finished. Keep experimenting.

i cant seem to get it right.

  43. wow, really nice. i just did this tutorial but with a picture of a girl. really nice effect. thank you so much. keep it up

  44. “Step 10
Add a vector mask to this layer and mask away some parts of this patern.”

Just my opinion, but it’d be great if you could include all steps & screen shots even for beginners who don’t know how to do even this part..as simple as this step may be.

It is not so thorough but your work is very nice and the end results are well done.

I would have to agree with Justin in this, “If you want this site to take off you really should include all the resources you used like the photo and patterns etc.”

My favorite tutorial sites include all the resources & items you need to complete the tutorial. It’s just nice to have it, not that I’m lazy but I want to create the same thing you have done and I cannot if I don’t have your specially made patterns or anything like that.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  45. Thank you for your tut! i like the way u explain the steps, it’s perfect for any one who juss started to use photoshop, so please keep on sharing, Thank you.

  46. Thanks…Its Awesome !!

  47. Thank you Sean. I will keep this in mind.

  48. I like the tutorial. I even linked the Star Wars to my site. I do have a couple of advice words. First, you need to spell check before posting. Not just for proper communication purposes but to also allow your presence to come off more professional and not rushed. And second, the “pattern” situation. If you are going to post a tutorial up, try not to have such a missing link. Just advice, otherwise I really enjoy the work and keep it up.

  49. The layer mask acts like the eraser tool. The only thing is that if you erase something that you needed you can always go back and repair the mistake.

Also when you want to mask something, after you add the mask to the layer you intend to change you need to have the Black foreground selected and using the brush tool erase just as you would do with the eraser tool.

    Hope this helps.

  50. Hey i just have a question about the vector mask i can’t get it to work the way i want it to can u give a little more information on that thanks.. other than that i love the tutorial…

  51. cool..I love your tutorials, I can see where I cud apply these effects…THANKS A LOT!!!!

  52. The reason I am also making images for things that are not that important is because there are also beginners that read these tutorials and these things helps them.

Also for the Big images applies the same thing. Will also try to make them smaller.

    Thank you for that.

  53. Your images are too big. Make them smaller so the page will load faster. On that note, you’ve got pictures for stuff that is not important, and don’t supply any on important ones.

Nice site, though. I like it.

  54. Beth,

Click on the Gradient itself to select different gradients and it will let you select – “foreground to transparent”.

  55. “Also from the Gradint settings make sure you select the Radial Gradient and for the color effect to be Foreground to Transparent.”

this is where i’m stuck, someone help please? where can i find the gradient settings?. I know where the Radial Gradient is ( i saw the button for it ) but where is the “Foreground to transparent” button?!

    TIA

  56. Hey Justin, thanks for your suggestion I’ll keep that in mind from now on.

  57. If you want this site to take off you really should include all the resources you used like the photo and patterns etc. Yes people can get them themselves but it really adds to a site that already includes those type of things from the start.

  58. I made these 2 patters myself a long time ago and used them in here.

If you want some similar patterns or better ones just do a search on Google or DeviantArt. I am sure you will find a lot of them.

  59. Where do you get the patterns?

  60. Super effect.Now ill play with photoshop.Thanks
